Virginity Tests

At a state-sponsored mass wedding near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, 152 women were forced to undergo virginity tests.

The state government offers free weddings to poor girls who "qualify" as virgins and not pregnant. It also gives 5000 rupees ($100) in gifts to each couple. Some were suspected of "fake marriages" to get the gifts.

Many girls were from the Dalit class or minority tribes.

"It was shocking to me, as the doctor used manual method to test my virginity, as if I've committed some crime," commented one 20-year-old girl.
